La Cámara de Comercio del Sur de Puerto Rico en su convención anual, llevó a cabo una ceremonia de premiación donde reconoció a los individuos e instituciones que hacen la diferencia empresarial y social en esta región del país. Esta ceremonia fue celebrada el pasado 18 de septiembre en el nuevo Best Western Pichi’s Hotel Convention Center & Casino de Guayanilla. Las premiaciones fueron otorgadas a individuos o instituciones que se destacaron en varas categorías y nuestro Directo, el Sr. Juan Orengo recibió la distinción en la categoría de Profesional de Servicio. ¡Muchas felicidades!

A los 77 años de edad falleció este martes, 25 de agosto de 2009, por la noche, el senador estadounidense Edward Kennedy. Hijo menor del financiero Joseph P. Kennedy, nació el 22 de febrero de 1932, en Boston, Suffolk County (Massachusetts) y estudió en la Universidad de Harvard y en la de Virginia, en la que obtuvo la licenciatura en Derecho en 1959. .

Ted Kennedy fue miembro del Congreso de los Estados Unidos de América desde el año 1962. Fue elegido senador por Massachusetts para ocupar la vacante de su hermano John Fitzgerald Kennedy, que había sido nombrado presidente de Estados Unidos de América. Posteriormente fue reelecto en los años 1964, 1970, 1976, 1982, 1988, 1994, 2000, and 2006, y sirvió desde el 7 de noviembre de 1962, hasta su muerte el pasado 25 de agosto de 2009.Durante su carrera como senador, se destacó como un fuerte promotor de las causas liberales, incluyendo los derechos civiles, la educación e inmigración, además de los temas de salud pública.

¡Felicidades, jueza Sotomayor!

En la tarde de hoy, jueves, 6 de agosto, se ha hecho historia.

La jueza Sonia Sotomayor, de origen puertorriqueño, acaba de ser confirmada como la primer hispana en el Tribunal Supremo de los Estados Unidos de América. Es también la tercera mujer en este prominente tribunal. La votación para su confirmación fue de 68 votos a favor y 31 en contra.

El triunfo de esta mujer latina nos es motivo de gran orgullo y de inspiración a esforzarnos a seguir nuestros sueños. Si Sotomayor pudo, también nosotros podemos.

Dios bendiga la labor de la jueza Sotomayor en el Tribunal Supremo.

Archivo Vertical Digital

En la biblioteca tenemos un archivo vertical con material impreso. Un "archivo vertical" es una colección de recortes de periódicos, folletos, etc. que se mantienen en carpetas para el uso de los usuarios de la biblioteca. Esta información por lo regular es más actualizada. Ahora en nuestra biblioteca tenemos además un Archivo Vertical Digital. Tiene la misma función que el impreso pero en formato digital. Sonia Sotomayor

Sonia Sotomayor es la jueza nominada por el Presidente Barack Obama para ser la primera jueza hispana, específicamente puertorriqueña, en la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos de América.

La vida de la jueza Sotomayor es descrita como la realización del sueño americano. Nacida de padres puertorriqueños en el condado del Bronx. A corta edad pierde a su padre y es diagnosticada con Diabetes. Es criada por su madre Celina Sotomayor .

Siempre se destacó en sus estudios, forjando su carrera en las Universidades de Princeton y Yale.

Temporada de huracanes

La biblioteca como su centro de información le ofrece datos para estar preparado en la recién iniciada temporada de huracanes. Ya comenzó la temporada de huracanes, que es desde el 1 de junio hasta el 30 de noviembre de cada año.

Debemos estar preparados ya que la posición geográfica de Puerto Rico nos ubica en la ruta de los huracanes. Por esta razón se recomienda que nos alistemos ante la eventualidad de la llegada de este fenómeno atmosférico con un equipo de suministros de emergencia, elaborando un plan familiar de emergencia y manteniéndose informados.
